One half to two thirds of the original 500,000 white Europeans came originally as indentured servants against their will. The crucial difference being that they were able to work and gain their freedom where the Africans were. There was an assimilation process, although there was a lot of Italian and Catholic races or Irish racism which lasted into the middle of the 20th century.
