A History of the Balkans
The balkan region had a predominantly peasant population, so there were obviously areas of industrialization. In those places, students and workers were being radicalized by the outlawed communist party. Many prominent yuguslavian communists in this period were receiving training and education in the us. They stoked calls for an independent, racially pure croatian state.
