I don't think there's any particular reason to think that biology is special here. You can imagine substituting the biology for non-biological systems, say, silicon circuits and it will continue to be the same. So, I at least adopted as my working hypothesis that basically is the computation and the information that matters for consciousness. But we don't understand consciousness, so, this could be wrong.
