The Impossible Task of Introduction to IIT
I think formally, it seems like the theory of consciousness closest to Kirk's thinking is integrated information theory or IIT. The idea is that you basically start with your own phenomenology and try to map those properties down into the world. A very simple example of this would be that on falling into a deep dreamless sleep, what this would predict will be that the parts of your brain become very unintegrated. Then when you wake up and your brain integrates, that's the arising of the stream of consciousness.
