The New Treasures of the Jewish Genealogy
First century Israel was a patriarchal culture. Women rarely made an appearance in a genealogy of a royal bloodline. Rahab, a Canaanite, and a sex worker from the city of Jericho is not who Matthew has in his genealogy. Then Tamar, also a Canaanite,. who we read about in a kinky story in Genesis 38, her husband died. And when her father-in-law, God by the name of Judah, refused to give her the younger son in marriage, as was the custom of the day, she dressed up like a prostitute on the side of the road.
