John Jacob Astor's fortune at the time of his death was estimated to be between $20 and $30 million. When he died, he allocated more than $400,000 of his fortune for the creation of a public library. Three generations of Astors followed suit before great grandson William Waldorf broke this chain. Even with his savvy arrangements, it took more than four decades for all of Astor's will to be settled.
