The National Portrait Gallery's Role in Today's World

The MPG was founded in 1856. It's quite a weird thing to have a portrait gallery. Well, that many countries still have them, it's quite an Anglo-Saxon phenomenon. The new logo comes from this incredible little sketch we found in the archive by the first director of the MPG, Sir George Scarf. He sort of traveled the UK and made it essentially kind of an inventory of portraits in all these different country houses and like a national collection. And he did this in 1893, just before our building opened in 1896,. We took that as the kind of DNA of our new logo.
