The American Entrepreneur or the European Dandy?

If i had to pick one the American model with its sense that human possibility and human self cultivation not grounded in a social status has the opportunity to allow any of us to live a good and comfortable life. How do we provide protections for those who for whatever reason are unable to fit the Horatio alger narrative or how do we avoid creating a society that is so wedded to the notion of hard work and grit that we do not protect the vulnerable out of a conviction that they do not deserve it?
