The Religious Right and the Abolitionist Movement

Many black abolitionists were traditional evangelicals but many others such as the journal truth Francis Harper Peter Smith and eventually Frederick Douglass were socially and theologically liberal. Among white abolitionists, Northeastern Unitarians Quakers and Congregationals were very overrepresented. Sol fails to give proper credit to black people for doing much of the work to achieve emancipation within the West.
