Is There a Law of Slavery?
Both christian and islamic philosophers held that freedom was the kind of normal, default, natural position for a human being. But at the same time, they held that while some people can be slaves. So it's this whole complicated, kind of three way dialectic going on. And so if war is one of these areas where human behavior falls short of the ideal, but is still acceptable, then slavery is actually kind of connected to that. It fits in also with the idea that hierarchy is an ideal that both christian and moslem philosophers in different ways by into Human society should be hierarchical.
