Life is so hard. Well, he's not done, though. Yeah, and it gets worse. It gets way, way worse. Yeah, like not only is he going through this, but he's also theologically making changes and differences. Like what else is occurring, let's say, between June and Sidney Rigdon coming to see Joseph, what now is he embarking on? What quest does he have now? This
Speaker 1
new revelation from God that's also occurring. Well, he's starting to get this idea in his head about Zion. This is the idea that there is sort of a consecrated holy land in America. And I think part of this is just a millennialism that was rampant at the time. And it was really unchecked by scripture. Just this zealousness for the end times this constant belief that it was now, you know? But part of it was also because once Rigdon gets involved and Joseph hears about Kirtland and he also hears about Jackson, he's like, we need to move. You know, he doesn't like it in New York or Harmony because he's thinking, you know, people here don't like us. Yeah. And there's this rumor, a set of rumors about, you know, his past and the money digging that may very well catch up to him. And it does. But he's thinking, I need to avoid this. I need to go to a place where people are more welcoming. I need to consolidate so we're not so spread out. So we need to move to Kirtland and we need to be thinking about, uh, like Kirtland's great. You know, Kirtland's a kind of a prefabricated city now. Um, Sydney Ridden had done a lot to, uh, build things up, but it's not really Joseph's ideal city. You know, it's a small town. Not very many people live there. We need to think about a city that we can build from the ground up. Wow. So he's like, we need to get people moving. What am I going to say? He starts saying that Kirtland, Ohio is on the frontier of what had been Eden. And that Jackson City is the center of Eden. Wow. Here, let me give you some dates too,
Speaker 2
guys. So January 2nd, Joseph Smith receives revelation detailing why the church must move to Ohio. That's in Doctrine and Covenants 38. And then after that, we'll fast forward to June 19th is when they start for Missouri to designate it as the land of Zion. So it's literally just a year later from this is of 1831, not 1830. Yeah, it's literally a year later now that he's going to want to move. But we're going to go into a little bit of the history of Ohio and then going into Missouri and the Missouri war. But he
Speaker 1
himself does move to Kirtland somewhere around the beginning of February of 1831. But like you're moving all these people from New York over. It's a, it's a migration. It takes a while.
Speaker 2
Yep. So he's good. But the interesting thing is, is he gets revelations
Speaker 2
how you're going to move. Like, I don't know how many people were there. Maybe let's say he had 36 or 40 members, but he's going to move them all with a revelation. And it's all these, like, families and
Speaker 1
everything. Like, he has to give them an incentive to go. Otherwise, you know, if he just says, well, we're kind of building a base of operations in Ohio, people could just say, oh, well, that's great. We'll stay here. You do that. And then just send us, you know, letters periodically of what you're doing and we'll kind of keep up the work over here. But that's not Joseph's vision. He wants everybody to kind of consolidate. And I think part of that may be because he wanted access to everybody's resources possibly um but it's hard to say but he he does want everyone to gather around kirtland and missouri by this point yeah it's a it's an idea that's kind of uh developing in his head and it becomes more and more of a thing as time goes on yeah that makes sense
Speaker 2
all right man i think this is a great start to going into 1830 all the way up to 1844 from Palmyra now into Ohio. Joseph, we've got Parley Pratt now on the scene. We still have Oliver Cowdery, Mr. The Deer is Christ man. And now we have Sidney. Oh, that was Martin
Speaker 2
Oh, that was Martin Harris. That's right. Martin Harris. By the way, you
Speaker 1
are never going to hear from again. Wow. Yeah, because everybody's like, dude, this Harris guy is kind of crazy. So,
Speaker 2
yeah. Yeah, but he gets marginalized real quick. Yeah, I don't know why I said Oliver Cowdery. I keep using his name wrong. Like, even in the first episode when I talked about the fraternity of Rodsman, I said Oliver Cowdery was involved. I did not mean that. He wasn't even born uh it was his father william cowdrey and uh there's a book by joseph quinn that goes into great details in great lengths showing the historical connections between william cowdrey and the fraternity of rodsman i'll have those in the show notes but uh yeah my apologies on that i meant william oliver for some reason just gets stuck in my head he's i usually miss he's an interesting guy yeah he's a very interesting guy i mean joseph smith uh endowed him with dowsing rods too so yeah those are interesting things to talk about but hey guys we're gonna end it for this episode and we're gonna get back into the move into kirtland ohio what was going on in ohio and then what brings them to Missouri because
Speaker 1
yeah we are also going to talk about polygamy oh
Speaker 2
exactly yes you know it was coming it's coming and it happens quicker than you would have ever thought possible guys and
Speaker 1
it gets super weird literally
Speaker 2
we're we went from June 9th to the general conference April 6th was the the beginning of the LDS uh church I guess it would be the church of Christ though in 1830 to 1831, January to February, moving from Palmyra into Kirtland, Ohio.
