How Do I Get a Smart Folder to Look at New Messages That Are Unread?

With my multiple smart folders, i haven't actually had to look at my own box for a long time. And but a female comes in from someone that you've never heard of. How is do now id have been a smart folder? It's part of it psychological, sure. But that's one that i go and look at, just to see if there's anything that i have missed.
