I was really struck, Peter, by what you said about that European perception of things not quite fitting the remit of a stable, set urban settlement and therefore branding something as barbarous in some ways. And we should remember that China is also, of course, one of the societies which is heavily shaped by riverine change. There are at least three great empires in the Eurasian Transcontinent, Charles V in Europe, the Ming and the Qing dynasties in China and the Mughals in India. We mustn't forget the Ottomans. They're triple continental, which is very unusual. So we talk about global empires, they're right in the mix.
