The Terminal Experiment by Robert Sawyer

The Terminal Experiment won the 1995 Nebula for Best Novel. It follows Dr. Peter Hobson, a biomedical engineer who discovers after using his super EEG on a terminal patient a small electrical reading that leaves the brain after death which some people interpret as the soul. So he brings this finding to his friend Sakhar Muhammad who is a whiz in the AI field and so what they do is they decide to upload Peter's brain as an experiment. Eventually it turns out that the is a little bit vengeful and decides to exact a bit of revenge on certain people who have harmed him.
