Culture seems to be a the beating heart of american politics. If you watch fox news or m s nbc, what people are king about is culture. The build back better bill or whatever agene could pass is relevant beyond the numbers. One of the things donald trump was really good at was deciding what Americans were going to talk about. And so when democrats spend all their time talking about issues that are least popular, they're making elections about the very subjects on which you're weakest.

Sam Koppelman is a Democratic strategist who served as director of surrogate speechwriting on the Biden campaign. He is the author, with former Attorney General Eric Holder, of Our Unfinished March: The Violent Past and Imperiled Future of the Vote—a History, a Crisis, a Plan.
