The unified QR to the Bitcoin design side is kind of another step in that direction. Bolt 12 will help a bit with that. But I think I guess the issue would be like if you have a wallet that doesn't support lightning. The whole point of BIP 21 was that it was backwards compatible because it's natively an on chain.
