China's Decision to Increase Production of Grain
Gabby: China decided that since its numbers were better than expected, it could export more grain. She says the country then switched to growing cash crops like cotton and tea so they can be sold for a profit on the international market. Gabby: They also raised tax rate from 20% to 28% of the harvest in 1958-1960. Despite this, production of grain dropped by 30%.
