Hermit Crabs and Shrimps Are Getting Hot and Bothered by Plastic Adactives
Oleumide is known to be what's called a sex paramone, or impho chemical. This acts as a stimulant for some marine species, including things like hermit crabs and shrimp. Oleumide also has a striking resemblance to oleic acid, a chemical release by arthropods during decomposition. And since hermit crabs are scavengers, they might misidentify oleomide as a food source, which creates a trap.
