Oxygen Cascades in Deer Mice

We talk with graham about studies and his students and colleagues have done on oxygen cascades in deer mice. Deer mice have the broadest elevational gradients of any mammal in north america. There are lowland populations in nebraska at nearly sea level, and highland populations that live at the top of mount evans in colorado at over 14 thousand feet. The animals there not only have to produce high amounts of metabolic heap to stay warm, which require high rates of oxygen consumption, but they have to do it in air that contains about forty % less oxygen than their relative experience in Nebraska. We also discuss two major alternative theor for how oxygen cascades should evolve.
