The Antithesis Between Light and Darkness
The gospel of john witnesses to the word becoming flesh, tabernacling among us. The evangelist here gives the hearers of the gospel an anticipation of what will happen in the story of the word. All existence depends upon the word. To exist is to have been brought into light. These verses introduce the theme of rebirth, which is an important one within the gospel. Those who receive the light are authorized as sons of god.
