Research on mindfulness also shows that, actually, this is relatively recent. When happiness researchers have pinged people to see how happy they are at different points in their day the biggest predictor of weather was whether they were being mindful. And that was true even if you control for whether the activity they were doing was n savoury or unsavoury. Then there is also gratitude meditations, where people are encouraged to make a list every day of things that they're grateful for, that they appreciate.
