i think it's that the international thing that you mention is part of it, but then also this idea of their being these enormous sub cultures. The size of a sub culture in the nineties would be mass culture to day. It's like deyta interestingly bifercated fan bays. On one hand, iron maiden, judas priest, early metallica, all these groups were seen is like the more serious version of metal for more serious hardrock people.
