The patriarch of the household owned everything and everyone in his respective family. The land was absolutely his, but only as a steward over it. It doesn't really belong to him. It belongs to the household gods. To sell one's land would be unthinkable. And so no, the household and all the lands couldn't be sold or divided in any way.
