John Defterios' book Germany's Russia Problem was written before the Ukraine crisis. He says he wanted to explain why and how Germany had approached Russia with naivety. The West Germans felt that many of their policies have been justified, writes Defterios. And there was this vision of a future without a division of Russia into Europe, he adds.
