I Think the Normativity Problem Is a Huge Problem
I think the normativity problem is a huge or at least it's currently one of the major types of attacks levelled against developmental stage models in general. For me, one of the bigger problems is the possibility of multiple histories that aren't the ones that we inherit. A richer sense of human history goes all way. So if we wanted to think of stages, we would be thinking of sets of possible stages, most of which we're blind to. That makes it a very, a more complex and organic and fun thing to think about, but also highly dubious to use as any kind of rigorous taxonomy or chotography.
