The low end estimate for how many viruses might be out there in mammals is around forty thousand, of which they estimate that maybe ten thousand are capable of human to human transmission. And predict didn't find any that looked particularly likete enit of themselves. Some researchers say there's probably way more pendemic capable viruses out there than will ever cause pendemics. Most of them arjust never goig to come in contact with humans.

In this episode of the podcast, Rob Reid and Kevin Esvelt discuss USAID’s new “Deep VZN” program, which aims to discover new pandemic-grade viruses and publish their genomes to the world. Esvelt estimates that there are currently around 30,000 people who could then easily build them.
