The Role of Smell in the Organisation of Groups
When near-blind animals meet in a tunnel, the first thing they do is sniff each other. Depending on whether they recognise the smell or not, the mole rats will either begin a fight or politely pass one another. And cues within their sense will help determine who passes on top and who gets trampled on belief in the squeeze. We've learnt that for naked mole rats, smell plays a vital role in distinguishing friend or foe. Through the use of smell sensor technology, we found the same might be true in humans. But smell sensors might be used in all kinds of ways in the future.
