Amazon.com took 13 years to offload off of Oracle onto AWS. If that's not switching costs in this industry, I don't know what is branding is very clear. By being the leader at this point, they're just winning. You know, probably with Microsoft and Google, you can feel more safe but for the longest time, their strategies were all over the place.
So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
