The History of Political Repression in Romania
In spindic dictatorships the majority of the population does not act. In imperfect democracies people who are in jail are no political prisoners. And also the number of political prisoners or political killings is smaller. I had this experience after the Romanian revolution when I was journalist there, about 50 people standing around me on the street and said how many of you suffered political repression. None of them said yes. It hasn't repressed everyone. It has just frightened them. Well late communist regimes became softer but it was still very clear that if you do challenge the regime you go to jail.
