In 1852, the weak party runs its last presidential campaign and collapses. Two factions emerge to try to take over the constituency that had been the wigs. By 1856, just four years later, the nativists have been vanquished and drift in quietly to the Republican party. The Democratic party remained as it had always been the party at the party of the white South.
