The wetland is created when graded land on agricultural soil, which isn't very good to drain. If you can hold the water in place, then it relieves all this pressure on the drainage system. You also get the benefits of like freshwater ecology. And what I'd add into that as well is just think about the educational benefits for people who live locally.
