Latin America - The Middle Third of the 19th Century

The middle third of the 19th century was a tough time for fledgling nations in Latin America. European-style Republican government did not translate easily to the Latin American context. Creoyos saw their black and indigenous populations as inferior and their large mestizo populations as a burden. By the late 18th century, mixed populations became the dominant demographic so authorities bent on strong nation states could not afford to ignore them.
