The Alternative to Prohibition and Ritual
All human societies prior to the enlightenment were based on prohibition. We did, at least in theory, step away from all that, but the enlightenment and said liberalism is the answer. If you take religion away and you just put throw people in a vacuum, they will go back to archaic patterns of unstructured religion. And that means scapegoating. On an industrial scale, that's what we're going to go to.
