Burke's Criticism of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution
Burke said the problem is we took too much faith in what he called economists, calculators and sophists. He predicted that there would be incredible violence in the French Revolution precisely because of this. The great 19th century historian and literary critic Gertrude Hemelfarb wrote in her book The Moral Imagination from Burke to Trilling.
