He blamed the West and various conspiracy theories for the democratic uprisings we saw in those places. The war in Georgia obviously happened in 2008 as a kind of response to the way that a lot of these countries were gravitating towards the West. He chose nationalism as a new ideology, an ideology which he had maybe played around with a bit before but it was in 2012 that he declared himself a nationalist. And since then the rollback in Russia started.
