The Origins of the Osage Tribe

In 1887, the Dawes Act was passed. It broke up collectively owned Indian land and distributed it to individuals. The Osage had a little more leverage to push back against the changes because they had purchased their land outright. So even when the government passed a statute in 1906 forcing the Osage to allot their land, the tribe was able to secure two important provisions.
