The Map of Iraq

The map of Iraq came into existence in 1917 when the British, or really in 1920. In 1970s the British seized Baghdad and ultimately all of what is now modern Iraq. They seized it from the Ottoman Empire that had been ruling this part of the world from 1534 to 1918. The League of Nations approved a British mandate of Iraq,. so they gave it to the British, but it just does a temporary thing, while Britain sorted it out.
