The Importance of Hermitism in the West
There's a sense that there's a futility to pursuing not only the institutional things, but to suffering the plagues of the day. And their hermits were never really promoted in the West. Saint Benedict was especially skeptical about people who would be hermits. So a lot of what ends up in the Western world is that there will be circles of hermits, but they're outside of the range of viability in society.
