There were fewer people living in Greece in the year 1000 BC than there had been two centuries before, perhaps half as many people. Demographic regimes in the pre-modern world were pretty fragile and a slight uptick in mortality or a decrease in fertility could have dramatic effects on population size. The decline in population affected absolutely every aspect of life in Greece at the time. If Ian Morris is right, then the population of Greece doubled in the 8th century.
