Lewis and the Cultural Illusion
Most of Chesterton's work was done in essays and they were done for local news columns. They had to use cultural illusions that readers of the newspaper could understand. Modern readers or contemporary or post-modern readers right don't understand them at all. So when we teach Chesterton one of the things I say is you have to make sure that you don't lose interest because you don't know the cultural illusion.
