In the UK, inflation has averaged 3.34% a year for 30 years and over that time everything costs 2.8 times as much. So if you're happy to live on $33,000 a year, then a million dollars is enough to retire. If you want to live on 60,000, then two million and so on. People can scale it or do their own calculations based on that. It depends how long you're going to be retired for - I've gone with 30 years which is roughly 60 to 90. That feels like the max. You could say, I'm not going to live that long. I'll plan for 20 or I's not going to retire
