Dolly Madison and Mary James Madison

Dolly Madison was technically born in North Carolina but considered herself as a Virginian. She grew up on a plantation in Virginia, a slave holding plantation. Her father emancipated the enslaved individuals they owned and moved them to Philadelphia. They were part of the Quaker community which was generally abolitionistbut didn't yet require emancipation as membership requirements. Moved a family to Philadelphia. First husband and one of their children died in the yellow fever epidemic.
