Dorothy Thompson was a trailblazing female journalist in the early 1920s. She moved to Europe to further her career and wound up running the New York Post's Bureau in Berlin. In 1935, trying to understand why she hadn't seen Hitler coming, Dorothy Parker said this: No people ever recognize their dictator in advance. He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship. He always represents himself as the instrument of incorporated national will.
