The Anxiety Stimulator

The cinematic doorknob turning without yet revealing what exactly or who exactly and for what reason is behind it is a quintessential image of anxiety, an anxiety stimulator. Here we're given just enough evidence of another person, another being like us on the other side of the door, but we're deprived of any knowledge about what they're really after. That's dusting. And so early on the infant has to in a sense defend themselves in some way against this anochmotic dimension of the other.
