The Absorption Lines Are Red Shifted

You can study the make up of stars by studying the light. If you run the light from a star through a spectrometer and produce a spectrograph, you get one of these. It's the rainbow pattern of light split by a prism. The dark lines are fron hoffer absorption lines. Every chemical element absorbs light at different wave lengths. So if you what the patterns are, you can point out at different stars and work out what the stars are made of. Each of those dots is actually an entire galaxy billions of light years away.
