A lesser bass player is gonna just follow along with that rhythm guitar. But you get somebody like John Pierce out in Los Angeles, one of those triple scale L.A. bass players. He's gonna know when to be right there with his drummer and when to be a third point on that triangle. So it's not so much the ingredients as how those ingredients are balanced against each other.
