The Importance of Believing
Psychologist Daniel Gilbert developed a theory of believing and unbelieving that he traced to the 17th century philosopher, Baruch Spinoza. He proposed that understanding a statement must begin with an attempt to believe it. The initial attempt to believe is an automatic operation of System 1 which involves construction of best possible interpretation. When System 2 is otherwise engaged, we will believe almost anything.
