The profession of rabbiter sprung when bonuses were introduced for rabbit scalps, starting in the late 18 hundreds. Up to a million rabbits were killed each year and canned for food to be sent to soldiers fighting in world war one and world war two. Although the rabbit industry certainly was raking in some money, the cost of lost farmland and sheep grazing areas vastly outweighed that sum. The governments of australia and new zealand decided to search for a solution.
