Brahms' Sonata Form Movement - The Development of the Third Section
Brahms is operating in a rigorous and sharply defined sonata form, but it's totally individual at the same time. As soon as a theme is stated, it starts developing immediately. This is what the great twentieth century composer, arnold schernberg called developing variation. Brahms is constantly transforming what we have just heard.
