There were some rich inventors at the time who might have been able to do this. The obvious explanation is that a few people saw a few things in the sky and then 19th century newspaper writers flood the zone with crazy stories. But there weren't hundreds of them flying all over the Southwest and Midwest for months in 1896. This would be ridiculous to say it's impossible that anyone could have ever seen one.
